Decking versus paving and patios

This will always be one of the top debates in home construction. However, when you are asked which is better, there is a visual beauty to a decking area. A key differentiator is the ease and ability to create split levels and create a focus area using a surround of balustrades. From a more practical perspective, the difference between decking and patios is a factor of its location in the home, the material used and the design. Don’t forget that unlike patios, you can install decking on almost any terrain and can negate the need to heavy soil removal to create a flat surface providing a considerable cost saving.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How long can I expect timber decking to last?

A significant factor in the length of time timber outdoor decking will remain safe and looking good will depend on the quality and also the frequency of timber board maintenance. Making use of top quality outdoor decking oils or stains used at an absolute minimum every 3 years will help your softwood outdoor decking last around 15 years.

  • When should I replace my decking?

Initially, there will be some visual signs: increased gaps between boards, visible movement of boards or balustrades are indicators that water increase or insects have started to soften or rot the wood. Removing a board and looking at the support structure below is a good safety practice. If the wood is soft then clearly it's time for a full replacement. The support structure is still in good condition the simply replacing the top boards will be a more cost-effective way to revitalise your decking area.  Composite decking boards can be fitted onto an existing timber structure and timber joists so this can be one way to migrate to composite decking with a lower initial investment.

  • Do you supply deck boards?

No - we are a decking contractor and offer a supply and fit service. We are not a timber merchant or composite decking board stockist so do not offer a supply only option. We will offer a fit only service but please be aware that if there are any shortages of materials or fittings this could have an impact on completion. This isn't the ideal scenario which is why most decking installers provide a full supply fit service as the ownership and responsibility all falls firmly on the decking contractors shoulders to get everything right and provide a quality finish in the agreed timeframe.
