How long can I expect timber decking to last?
A significant factor in how long timber decking stays safe and looks good is the quality of the timber and how often the boards are maintained. Using good quality decking oils or stains at least every three years will help softwood decking last around 15 years.
When should I replace my decking?
There will be some visual signs first: wider gaps between boards, or boards and balustrades that move, show that water or insects have started to soften or rot the wood. Lifting a board and looking at the frame below is good practice. If the wood is soft, it is time for a full replacement. If the frame is still in good condition, simply replacing the top boards is a more cost effective way to revitalise your deck. Composite boards can be fitted onto an existing timber frame and joists, which can be one way to move to composite decking with a lower initial outlay.

No. We are a decking contractor and offer a supply and fit service. We are not a timber merchant or composite board stockist, so we do not offer a supply only option. We will offer a fit only service, but please be aware that any shortage of materials or fittings could affect completion. That is not the ideal arrangement, which is why most decking installers provide a full supply and fit service: the responsibility for getting everything right, and for a quality finish in the agreed timeframe, then sits firmly with the installer.
