Decking Sheffield is the trading name of The Yorkshire Timber Decking Company Ltd, established in 2000 and run by Richard Charles. Richard works alongside his son Ebberson and Mark Hudson — a father and son team with a third pair of experienced hands, and no subcontractors. When you get a quote from us, the people who priced the job are the people who will build it.
How Decking Sheffield Started
Decking Sheffield is the specialist decking arm of The Yorkshire Timber Decking Company Ltd, founded in 2000 and owned and led by Richard Charles. Over twenty‑five years we have built a reputation across Sheffield and South Yorkshire for decking and outdoor spaces that look right on day one and still perform a decade later.
We are Yorkshire born and bred, and we take the unglamorous parts seriously — honest workmanship, turning up when we said we would, and building things that stand up to a British winter rather than just photographing well in June.
Alongside decking we take on wider landscaping design and build work. Most of what we do is composite decking and composite fencing, usually with the same brief: a striking garden that needs as little upkeep as possible. We have built storage and seating into deck designs, and we build bespoke garden rooms and offices for people who want to be closer to the garden without being cold in it.

The Team
Richard Charles
Owner & Lead InstallerI have worked in landscaping and decking all my life. Top quality workmanship on bespoke structures takes years of experience, because every single job is slightly different. The quality of the materials matters just as much — you cannot build a long lasting structure without both.
Aesthetics, design, and how a space is actually used day to day are the next‑level considerations that experience helps with, though a natural flair for it and genuine enjoyment of the work count for a lot too. Craftsmanship and materials are a given for any premium business. Punctuality, polite staff and keeping clients updated on start dates when weather or supply shifts are just as important to us.
Outside work I did gymnastics until my mid fifties and now do Cyr Wheel — look it up. I am also a keen chess player.
Ebberson Charles
Installer — 15 Years' ExperienceI have fifteen years in landscaping and decking. I started coming on site on Saturdays to help my Dad from the age of fourteen, and we work together now as a father and son team. I know the trade inside out.
I also run my own artificial grass company, so I am picking up the additional skills that running a business takes. Dad likes to joke that I suffer from BTHD — Better Than His Dad.
My dog Flo often comes on site if the client is happy with it. Despite getting plenty of exercise at work, I am at the gym most days too.
Mark Hudson
Installer — Timber & CompositeI have many years of experience in timber and composite decking. While Ebberson and Richard tend to handle the more skilled aspects of a job, I am the third pair of hands when one is needed, and I take care of the background work that keeps an installation running smoothly.
I am vegan and genuinely interested in bicycles — I cycle to and from site every day.
Flo
Site DogFlo is Ebberson's mongrel, originally from Spain. She does the usual sit and stay, but she will also jump through a hoop made with your arms, play dead if you point a finger and say bang, and pull a handkerchief out of your pocket on the command "steal it".
Probably the most talented member of the team. She only comes on site if the client is happy to have her there.
