Decking Fitted in Wharncliffe Side

Wharncliffe Side sits along the Don with Wharncliffe Woods rising behind it, and a good number of gardens here either back onto woodland or sit close enough that it makes no practical difference. It is a lovely place to have a deck and it comes with one specific maintenance reality worth understanding before you choose materials.

Leaf fall and shade produce algae, and algae is what makes decking slippery. Not the boards themselves — the thin green film that grows on them. A deck under or near trees stays damp longer, collects organic matter in autumn, and if that is left to break down on the surface it feeds exactly the growth you do not want.

Three practical consequences. Choose a textured or grooved board finish, which gives noticeably better grip when wet than a smooth surface. Expect to wash it — twice a year rather than annually on a woodland edge plot, and clear leaves in autumn rather than letting them sit over winter. And keep gaps between boards clear, because blocked gaps hold water on the surface instead of letting it drain through, which accelerates the whole problem.

None of that is onerous, and it is the honest trade‑off for a garden with trees in it. Composite handles these conditions considerably better than timber, since it does not absorb moisture and algae has less to grip, but it is not immune — anyone telling you composite never needs washing has not maintained one next to a wood.

Gardens here run larger than in the city and the ground is rarely level — the village sits between the river and the rising woodland, so plots tend to fall towards the Don or climb towards the trees.

On the bigger plots the useful question is not how large a deck should be but where in the garden it belongs. The spot immediately outside the back door is convenient and is not always where the light is, especially with woodland shading one side. On a long garden it is worth walking it properly at the time of day you would actually use it before deciding — and we will say so if we think the obvious position is the wrong one.

Mature trees are the constant. We design decks around trees rather than through them, cutting the platform to leave a collar around the trunk, keeping the frame clear of major roots and using adjustable supports rather than mass concrete where we can. Some trees will be protected, and trees on the woodland boundary may not be yours at all — worth establishing before a design assumes anything.

Wharncliffe Side falls under Sheffield City Council, though the village sits at the rural edge of the city and some of the surrounding land is Green Belt.

Decking is generally permitted development provided the platform sits no more than 300mm above existing ground level, and that it and other buildings cover no more than half the land around the original house. On a garden falling towards the Don, a deck level with the back door will often exceed that at its outer edge.

Two rural‑edge factors. Green Belt designation affects what can be built on land around the village, and while a domestic deck within an existing garden is generally a different matter from development in open countryside, it is worth checking if your plot extends beyond the obvious residential curtilage. And trees may be protected, whether by Tree Preservation Order or by their position on the woodland boundary.
