The newer kid on the block: ‘composite decking’ is taking the UK by storm, with sales rapidly rising year on year and it’s easy to see why. As well as the various colours and styles it’s the removal of some of the chores associated with timber decking, which is why it is proving so popular.  We try as much as possible to aid in decision making between timber and composite decking but clearly don’t make that decision. What we do at Decking Sheffield is try to provide as much information as possible to enable our customers to make the best decision for them based on their personal preferences and circumstances. Once we’ve provided our bit of information and education on composite decking the decision is then up to you. We are experts in composite decking Yorkshire wide.

What is composite decking?

Composite decking materials are derived from the combination of wood fibre and plastic mixed with pigment. The waste wood is attained from wood mills and furniture factories. At the same time, the recycled plastics from shopping bags and other plastic packaging complete the materials. For many, settling with composite decking is for its lesser need for maintenance, compared with all forms of timber decking. Also, composite decking has a longer lifespan since there won't be the same risk of rotting, warping, or splitting which you would find with a natural timber. The earlier ‘first generation’ composite decking did have a tendency to lighten over time. However, the ‘second generation’ composites have much better UV shielding to virtually eliminate any fading for at least 25 years. As well as different colours there are also different types of composite decking options; textured grain, two-faced, plastic-wrapped, paper board, watertight, and many others but we will keep things simple and focus on the most popular, which are tried and trusted.

Composite Decking Maintenance

Composite decking requires minimal care and maintenance when compared to timber decking. However, you still need to tend to composite decking to get the best out of it. Despite requiring minimal maintenance, caring for your composite decking will help it to retain its new and bright look. Ensure that there is no standing water on your composite decking is one useful tip and ensuring that the underside of your composite decking is well ventilated – so just be mindful of how you use the space under raised decking as storage.

Cost of Composite decking versus Timber decking

The initial cost of composite decking is the big difference compared to timber decking. Once it’s been installed, composite decking requires minimal care and has a low cost of maintenance. By comparing the long term cost of both composite decking and timber decking, you would most likely settle for composite decking. However, in the short term, composite decking comes at a considerable cost, even though it's an investment that is worth every penny. The cost of composite decking can easily be offset over time due to its durability and long lifespan when compared to timber decking.

Composite decking versus Timber decking

For any of these two, there are advantages and disadvantages. However, three factors often determine whatever choice you settle for. Firstly, the installation cost; pressure treated timber is by far the cheapest of the options. Looking from the angle of durability and lower maintenance, composite decking will always be the better option. This is due to its water-resistant and dense nature. The other aspects of appearance and environmental stance are probably the most subjective. Some people just want to use natural products and think this natural look has appealing visuals. However, with wood effect composite decking also available this has become less of a factor from an aesthetic perspective. From an environmental angle, whilst most timber products are now sourced from sustainable forests, composites are mostly made up of recycled materials and if they last longer, effectively their lifetime carbon footprint will be less. So in reality one doesn’t necessarily outperform the other in this respect. Consequently this typically leaves the final choice down to durability, maintenance time and effort versus initial cost of installation.

Looking for composite decking installers near me?

  • How long can I expect timber decking to last?

A significant factor in the length of time timber outdoor decking will remain safe and looking good will depend on the quality and also the frequency of timber board maintenance. Making use of top quality outdoor decking oils or stains used at an absolute minimum every 3 years will help your softwood outdoor decking last around 15 years.

  • When should I replace my decking?

Initially, there will be some visual signs: increased gaps between boards, visible movement of boards or balustrades are indicators that water increase or insects have started to soften or rot the wood. Removing a board and looking at the support structure below is a good safety practice. If the wood is soft then clearly it's time for a full replacement. The support structure is still in good condition the simply replacing the top boards will be a more cost-effective way to revitalise your decking area.  Composite decking boards can be fitted onto an existing timber structure and timber joists so this can be one way to migrate to composite decking with a lower initial investment.

  • Do you supply deck boards?

No - we are a decking contractor and offer a supply and fit service. We are not a timber merchant or composite decking board stockist so do not offer a supply only option. We will offer a fit only service but please be aware that if there are any shortages of materials or fittings this could have an impact on completion. This isn't the ideal scenario which is why most decking installers provide a full supply fit service as the ownership and responsibility all falls firmly on the decking contractors shoulders to get everything right and provide a quality finish in the agreed timeframe.
